East Africais facing its most prolonged and severe famine on record, leaving millions at risk of starvation. Relentless drought, soaring food prices, and the collapse of agricultural livelihoods have created a humanitarian catastrophe. Families that once relied on farming and livestock for sustenance now struggle to find even the most basic necessities.
Currently, around 20.2 million children are threatened by severe hunger, thirst, and disease, while water insecurity has more than doubled, affecting 24 million people. With wells running dry and millions of livestock perishing, communities are losing their sources of food and income, pushing them further into desperation.
The crisis extends beyond food insecurity—over two million people have been internally displaced, forced to leave their homes in search of food and water. Education is also under siege, with 2.7 million children already out of school and an additional four million at risk of dropping out.
As UNICEF’s Ms. van de Wiel highlights, urgent humanitarian aid is critical to saving lives and building resilience:
“Humanitarian assistance must be continued to save lives and build the resilience of the staggering number of children and families who are being pushed to the edge—dying from hunger and disease and being displaced in search of food, water, and pasture for their livestock.”
